There are some flash games out there that present unique challenges to the player, and these challenges range from obscure and silly to methodical and masochistic. Running Fred would be a clear example of the latter. When you begin playing this game you will immediately notice how visually stunning it is considering its confines as a flash game. Although he is a gullible kid who is just trying to flee from death at every turn, Fred has a great 3D design that is pleasing for any gamer’s eyes.
One glowingly positive thing about Running Fred would be the fact that the graphics are of high quality. Combining this with the up tempo gameplay movements, you could compare Running Fred to a cross between a 3D Sonic The Hedgehog game and the classic shooting game Doom. The colors in this game have the right balance, not being too bright nor too dark.
The objective of this game is simple. Navigate Fred past all the dangerous obstacles and get him to safety. That is clearly easier said than done as gamers will get the masochistic feeling of this game almost immediately. Running Fred stays true to his name as he is always running forward. You can’t stop him from running. You can only freely move left and right and hope that you don’t hit a deadly obstacle. There are a variety of obstacles to avoid such as swords, spikes, bottomless pits, saw blades and falling objects.
The margin for error is so small and this could be the main reason why this game may be difficult to get good at. One false move while running and Fred will be a goner. Some of the challenges in this game will only give a certain amount of time to run while other challenges judge your performance based on how much time you spent or how far you went. You will also have an inventory menu to work with as you can collect tokens during gameplay and then spend them on skills, powers and avatars.
Be prepared to fail early and often when you play as you will have to adjust to the speed of the game. I had a hard time initially adjusting to the game’s speed as I felt like I had little to no control of Fred as he moved along. Fred is allowed to jump from platform to platform and this is where the most difficult adjustments need to be made. Jump too early or too late, and you’re a goner. I believe the jumping functions of this game could have been better developed. Overall, if you like pressing masochistic challenges in a flash game, Running Fred could be the game for you.
